Grayson's Glory

Today's volley. This time on CNN. The topic, of course, health care.

Just for reference, here's yesterday's bit on The Ed Show on MSNBC:

Fox News vs The World

Let's just make it really simple. Lying isn't good. My momma taught me that years ago.  Fox News must not have listened.

As HuffPost's Jason Linkins reported earlier today, Fox News took out a full-page ad in the Friday addition of the Washington Post to boast about its coverage of the Tea Party protests last weekend in D.C. and also to goad its rivals by asking "How Did ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN Miss This Story?" A number of these networks didn't take the Fox News ad lying down, and fired back, saying the ad was "just false." CNN's Rick Sanchez gave [...]

Hooo, boy! This is some great TV. Congressman Gary Ackerman rips into SEC officials over the Bernie Madoff debacle. Here's CNN's Rick Sanchez..

Let The Parties Begin

After our frigid weather late last week, we're seeing a wonderfully sunny and warm Sunday. In Washington, the concerts and parties leading up to the inauguration have begun. The cable folks are wall-to-wall with coverage, the MSNBC anchors still warmly tucked away inside, in front of huge windows to the Washington Mall. CNN still seems dedicated to having their anchors and guests try to look warm in their outdoor set. How big a nerd am I? I'm torn between sticking with the inauguration coverage or watching the NFL playoffs.  Guess it's finally time to figure out how to make the picture-in-picture function on my TV work! While I work on that, take a moment to consider the newest numbers about the Obama Administration:

No pressure

It's not unusual for presidents to take office with a degree of public optimism, but Barack Obama will be sworn in with hopefulness that we haven't seen in a long while. To the added advantage of the incoming [...]

Competition Is Good

That's why I'm pleased that MSNBC is getting some good numbers. It helps even the laying field with Fox and CNN. However, I'd really appreciate it if they'd cool it with the "Breaking News" stuff during the day. When you're doing the same "Breaking News" two hours after you first "Broke" it, I get irritated. And change the channel. Take heed.

2008 Numbers: MSNBC…

MSNBC is noting its 2008 ratings… MSNBC HAS BEST YEAR EVER – IS FASTEST GROWING CHANNEL IN ALL OF TELEVISION IN 2008 “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” Dominates “Campbell Brown” at 8 PM “The Rachel Maddow Show” Out-Rates “Larry King Live” Launch to Date NEW YORK – Dec. 17, 2008 – MSNBC had its best year ever in 2008 and [...]

They're Leaving

Such a shame. Both were excellent reporters. State of the industry, I'm afraid.

Kathleen Koch and Kelli Arena leave CNN…

Fishbowl DC reports that CNN’s Kelli Arena and Kathleen Koch are leaving CNN. It also has Koch’s email on her departure… 2009 will be a year of change for the nation. And it will be a year of change for me. After 18 years with CNN, I am moving on. I am so grateful for the [...]

Stupid Moves Of The Day

Actually, this came down yesterday, but I avoided posting anything on it, thinking I'd save up some comments and use it for a new article on Huffington Post.  However, I've decided to go ahead and give you a chance to think about it.  I'm talking about CNN's decision to shut down it's science, space, and technology unit, kicking long-time reporter/anchor Miles O'Brien to the curb. If it's any consolation, he's not alone. NBC is trimming bureaus over the next few days.  But, let's take a closer look at the CNN move and see if we can make it make sense.

CNN downgrades science, space, and technology

When I first heard yesterday that Miles O'Brien, CNN's chief technology and environment correspondent for years, was leaving the network, and CNN was scrapping its science, space, and technology unit, I was deeply disappointed [...]
If you need more. But, the entire industry is filled with stupid moves right now:

More on CNN’s Science/Tech cuts…

CJR Daily’s Curtis Brainard takes a dim view of CNN gutting its Science/Tech unit… Yet it is exactly “what is on the horizon” at CNN that also makes the decision to eliminate its science staff seem so illogical. On Monday, The New York Times published a long article about the network’s intention to begin competing in [...]

Classic Punishment

Not only is this great TV news reporting, I love the judge's creative sentence for these young'uns. You'll love it!

Borrowed From The Blogosphere

As everyone is noting, this story is so inspiring, but so sad. You will shed a tear. You will realize the inspiration. It's also a darn good example of how to put together a TV news story.

It's All Politics

Had the house to myself for a couple of hours tonight, so I immersed myself in TV politics, Olbermann, Maddow and Campbell Brown.  She was pretty "right on" with her commentary tonight. I'm becoming somewhat impressed.

Lesson For Journalists

Rick Sanchez, teacher.  Topic: How to conduct an interview.  Just simple, persistent, questions.

Techie Election Night

Election night should be entertaining, considering CNN is going use holographic technology to "beam" reporters from remote locations into the CNN Newsroom, where it will appear they're standing right there, along with the "Best Political Team on Television". And the other nets have things up their high tech sleeves, too!

Networks Prep New Technology For Election Night

Broacasting & Cable's Glen Dickson previews the new technology being used by CNN for Election Night, including a system to "teleport" correspondents from around the country into the CNN newsroom. Another change will be with exit polling. "The states are [...]

Inroads

Big time.

October Ratings - MSNBC: "We Tamed the Giant of Larry King"

Brian Williams couldn't do it. Neither could Joe Scarborough, Rita Cosby, Dan Abrams, Ashleigh Banfield, Deborah Norville or Alan Keyes . But MSNBC's new 9pmET show did. The [...]

CNN Goes Comedy

Well, at least for one show on Saturday night. Still, for those who think MSNBC has crossed the line with Olbermann and Maddow, this is really a discussion on a whole new level.  Mixing a comedy show into what's been all-news.

D.L. Hughley to Add Humor to CNN

Cable news can be unintentionally humorous. Now CNN wants to serve up the laughs itself, signing the comedian D.L. Hughley for a new weekend series tentatively titled "D.L. Hughley Breaks The News."[...]

Friday Video

Oh, my!  CNN's Jack Cafferty left no doubt this afternoon about what he thinks about Sarah Palin. His body language speaks volumes, but his words left Blitzer quite speechless.

Unbelievable!

Spent much time today watching the hearings on the financial bailout plan now before Congress. I'll say one thing, the folks on that banking committee aren't going to just roll over and accept the "hand it all over" proposal. I just don't see how there can be any agreement this week.  Wall Street was none too happy, either.  Down about 150 points.  There were some great questions asked by the senators, but I don't think many of them were happy with the answers they got.  I'll be looking for clips later.
In the meantime, the REALLY unbelievable event today.  Palin sits down to talk with real "world leaders", but kicks reporters out after a 29 second (yup, less than half a minute) photo op. Well....them reporter folks got all riled up.  Good for them...

Dear Media, pull your reporters from the Straight Talk Express

In the aftermath of the revolt against the Palin/McCain campaign kicking reporters out of the photo opps Sarah Palin is holding at the UN today, there's a larger question that remains. Why is the corporate media continuing to subsidize John McCain's free photo opps by having staff on his bus and plane? It costs a fortune to have reporters embedded with [...]
