Headed down the homestretch, with the weekend definitely in sight! Big storms blew through here yesterday afternoon and evening, although the biggest seemed to pass to the northwest and southeast of us. That left us with some beneficial rain, but we didn't get the tornadoes that hit other parts of the area. They've moved on to the upper midwest today. That's the part of the country where I grew up. I just don't recall having tornadic thunderstorms this late in the season when I was young. Maybe my memory fails me, but I remember late October (around Halloween) with sleet, and even snow. Not tornadoes. Hmmmm. Climate Change? Or just my failing memory...
We begin tonight with politics. Presidential politics. And some thoughts on how former Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee, is doing better than almost anybody (other than himself and his staff) expected up in Iowa. One poll has him in third place, but Andrew Stevens notes another poll that has him in a tie for SECOND!
He's doing much better than expected, and you can see why. He really does represent the GOP that Bush and Rove have helped create: based on fundamentalist religion and dedicated to massive government spending on the needy as a sign [...]

Next door, in Illinois, they're gonna be doing some voting, too -
Crooked Hastert Calling it Quits
You know it's bad when you'd rather quit Congress than stick it out until the next election. Apparently, Denny Hastert can't take it anymore. Former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) is expected to announce that he plans to leave the House later this year, setting up the widely anticipated prospect of a special election to replace him, Republican sources on Capitol Hill confirmed. Hastert initially planned to make an announcement Thursday, but has since scrapped that decision, according to one GOP aide. The former speaker, who announced his plans to retire [...]
