There's going to have to be some really good explaining done by Dems to convince me that this compromise is a good deal for all of us. I'm always one to say "let's sit down and talk about it", no matter what the issue. Compromise is good, but I'm not seeing what the Dems really win out of this deal.
White House, lawmakers reach deal on telecom immunity
At yesterday’s White House press conference, a reporter asked the president whether he could find “common ground” with the congressional majority on anything. Bush brought up FISA. A few seconds after saying it was a “good law” that shouldn’t be changed, the president said, “[T]he law needs to be changed, enhanced, by providing the phone companies [...]
If you liked the Protect America Act -- President Bush's sweeping revision to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act signed into law in August -- you're going to love the soon-to-be-unveiled surveillance bill from the Senate intelligence committee. President Bush and Admiral Mike McConnell do, at least. A day after the White House made available to the committee "millions" of pages of material documenting how the telecommunications industry complied with warrantless requests for Americans' international communications after 9/11, the committee wrote into its bill a provision [...]
The Right-leaning bloggers are overjoyed - on a couple of fronts -
...Mort Kondracke just talked about Nancy Pelosi waving the white flag on ending the Iraq war. Now Democrats are waving the white flag on the FISA bill, complete with "immunity to telecommunications companies" that helped in the terrorist surveillance program. I'm betting that people are noticing that President Bush isn't the lame duck president that the Beltway media portrayed himself as. I'm equally certain that [...]
And the Left doesn't let up on the Dems, either -
AT&T, Other Telcoms, Buy Victory
...The fact that this was completely predictable does not make it any less reprehensible: … Let's just describe very factually and dispassionately what has happened here. Congress — led by Senators, such as Jay Rockefeller […]
UPDATE: This one ain't over -
...The Military Commissions Act. Warrantless wiretapping. Shredding of Habeas Corpus. Torture. Extraordinary Rendition. Secret Prisons. No more. I have decided to place a "hold" on the latest FISA bill that would have included amnesty for telecommunications companies that enabled the President's assault on the Constitution by [...]
Go figure. UPDATE 2:
Reid Tries To Shut Down Dodd’s Hold
Well this is quite shocking: Tim Starks of Congressional Quarterly reports that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) plans to bring the Senate’s surveillance bill up for floor debate in mid-November. That’s despite the hold that Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) plans to place on the measure — something first reported by Election Central’s Greg Sargent. I’m [...]
