One Down, Four To Go

After a rainy Monday, we awoke this morning to a misty, foggy, Tuesday. And some idiot driver had to raise my blood pressure on the drive in to work this morning. The street we were on is extremely busy during the morning and afternoon commutes.  The "other driver" was behind me.  As the street widened to two lanes (the right lane offers access to the freeway, the left stays on city streets) I stayed in the left.  The "other driver" speeds into the right lane then, immediately, veers back into the left lane, in front of me.  That little display gained her one single car length advantage. Idiot. Now, I feel better...

The puppy is doing better.  We're hoping that we may have the worst of the reaction to the heartworm treatment behind us.

Now, let's talk money.  Political money.  We're coming to the point in the campaigns where you're going to see polling numbers swing, depending on ad spending.  Who's in the best position?  Overall, it ain't Republicans.

In fundraising, Democrats thumping GOP candidates: Clinton and Obama each have more available money than combined total for top four Republicans

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both have more available campaign cash on hand than the top GOP candidates, Giuliani, Romney, Thompson and McCain, combined. That trio has $32 million among them -- Rudy has $16 million; Mitt has $9 million, Fred has just over $7 million and McCain's campaign is technically in debt. A lot of Mitt's money came from his vast fortune, not contributors. The Democratic base is fired up and [...]

That, obviously, means trouble for McCain -

McCain Fundraising Crisis

According to CNN, John McCain’s struggling presidential campaign is spending cash almost as fast as he raises it. In Q3 the McCain campaign had a 95% burn rate on the money it took in—raising $5.7 million and spending $5.5 million while only paying off $50,000 of a $1.7 million debt. Currently the campaign has [...]

A major campaign issue, of course, is health insurance.  The S-CHIP program, in particular, is getting a lot of attention.  We posted updates about it last night, here and here, but the topic continues today. The following post reprises a TV ad we talked about last night, but also includes details on Keith Olbermann's interview with the Frost family.  It's powerful TV.

Meet Bethany Wilkerson

A couple of weeks ago, Graeme Frost and his family joined congressional supporters of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP) to endorse the bipartisan expansion of the policy. As has been well documented, some far-right activists went after the Frost family, using bogus information to argue that Graeme doesn’t deserve coverage from the state [...]

And, there's a big about-face from the congressional office that first pushed the anti-Frost storyline -

McConnell Aide Admits He Pushed Baseless Smears, But Lies About His Supposed ‘Skepticism’

Last week, ThinkProgress reported that Don Stewart, the communications director for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), had sent an e-mail to reporters encouraging them to cover the right-wing campaign to smear 12-year old Graeme Frost and his family. In the e-mail, Stewart claimed that research by conservative bloggers proved that Democrats did a [...]

And, there's some power counter to the critics today -

Lying Liars and Their Lies About SCHIP

FamiliesUSA has put out a mythbusting fact sheet about SCHIP, a sad and tragic necessity in the wake of the abject lies told by the President of the United States and those who get off licking his shoeleather.  To wit: "Claims by the President that this bill raises the CHIP eligibility level to $83,000 (400 percent [...]

Keep talking about Health Insurance -

A Study In Contrasts

From Gov. Kathleen Sebelius writing at HuffPo: …it is mystifying that the President and his few congressional allies are saying that government involvement in health care is a step toward dangerous, socialized medicine. I know my children were the beneficiaries of a government-run insurance program until they became adults. Members of Congress and their children are eligible [...]
