Iowa Caucuses

I hate to say it, but I must agree with Kevin Drum - the Iowa Caucuses carry WAY too much importance.  That's my home state. I covered the caucuses for more than ten years. The weather is typically brutal. You end up with a dozen or so neighbors in somebody's living room.  They sip coffee, nibble on appetizers, discuss the candidates and cast their ballots. Hardly representative, even though it's repeated in hundreds of homes around the state. Still, the nation watches and waits for the results. Why?

Talk of a split caucus date, which surfaced last week, was kicked up several notches this morning with David Yepsen's column calling for the Republicans to meet on Jan. 3 and the Democrats on Jan. 5.  The GOP first talk seems to be coming from the Romney camp, as state leader Doug Gross is the one out front on it.
