First of all, thanks for the kind notes from a few of you concerned about our wonderful pup with heartworms. She is doing better tonight - actually came out and begged for a handout at supper! Let me say one thing - if you live in an area where heartworms are a problem, do not ignore them! Get your pet tested and keep them on the medicine to prevent these things. This was a shelter pup who apparently had them when we adopted her. They were discovered at her first visit to the vet (she'd been given her initial round of rabies shots, etc at the shelter). The treatment, as I've noted before, is brutal for the animal and for the owners. You watch for every cough, every episode of heavy breathing, and pray that it doesn't last and require an emergency vet visit. I'm hoping that we're near the turning point. The vet checked in tonight and said things sound good. I'm praying. She is a sweet pup. As I mentioned this weekend, she'd been in and out of the shelter for 2 1/2 years. Can you believe that? 2 1/2 years? And she still knew her name and was still housbroken! No wonder she's been timid for months with us and is finally coming around to respond. How could we not be concerned and worry every time that a quiet time is interrupted by a cough. Or heavy breathing. Our vet says we should be nearing the end of the roughest (and most dangerous) time of the treatment. But, there's still another six or seven weeks to do. When she's back to full health, there's a big, long, walk by the river waiting. Okay, enough from me. Let's get back to some good stuff from the "internets" -
The Continuing Tragedy of Neglected New Orleans
ome of my worst moments as an American occurred when New Orleans was left to drown, tens of thousands of American souls—already horribly chafed under the burdens of poverty and racism—just left to suffocate in front of the world, a nauseating racist abuse of Americans I'll never forget. Other than seeing Al Gore continue to be apart from his true place (the oval office), few Americans experiences grieve me more. It couldn't seem possible after Katrina, but the Republicans have deliberately abused and [...]
