The School Speech Debate

It's just mind-boggling to me that Obama's planned speech for school kids has turned into such fodder for a political argument. Does every parent run to change the channel whenever the president comes on TV? What if, by chance, they're at a friend's house when the president pops up.  Do the other parents have to provide ear plugs? Do they really think this president has the power to completely take control of every child's mind by talking about staying in school and working hard?

Early Late Night

Jay Leno at 9 pm. I'll likely be watching. I've long thought that hour is ripe for counter-programming. Heck, I put the first 9 pm newscast on the air in the Little Rock market, back in 1997. I seldom stay up late enough to catch the 10:35 talkers (getting old has its hazards!), so the chance to watch something "light" at 9:00 sounds perfect to me. I'm getting bored with the onslaught of endless spin-offs of crime and law programs, anyway. Bring it on. Let's see what happens. I'm betting that it works.

Blogs for Books

Today's the day set aside for all bloggers to write something about the books that helped them enjoy reading as a child. For me, it was the Hardy Boys Mysteries that got me hooked.  I could read every one of them, over and over. Nancy Drew was the female version.  It may be a generational deal, though. We tried to get our own children interested, but it never happened. I know the books are still sold and have been updated. I spent hours and hours reading (and re-reading) those books, but also loved Mark Twain. Huck Finn was a favorite. I'm not pointing fingers at any particular administration, because these cases have been around for more than just a day or two. First, let's look at how reports of behavior issues at the embassy in Kabul were ignored. Repeatedly.
