Testing Texas

We'd say our neighboring state is scoring quite poorly on this issue of seceding from the United States. If they do secede, it looks like times will be lean. Really lean. And lonely.

Secession-ready Texas has received most federal disaster assistance of any state.

Just weeks after declaring that Texas might secede from the union because "the federal government has become oppressive," Gov. Rick Perry (R) today asked for more federal aid when he "issued a disaster declaration" because of the swine flu. Mother Jones' Jonathan Stein found that, since the beginning of FEMA's record-keeping, Texas has actually received [...]

The Old Is New Again

Well, now. Look what I stumbled upon today!  The first offline blog editor program I ever used seems to be back, in an updated form.  We'll be playing with it for a while.

Don't Say Nobody Warned You!

If these stories keep coming out, we're gonna forget there's a recession/depression underway!

Military agency warned Bush administration in 2002 that its interrogation program was ‘torture.’

In a July 2002 document uncovered by the Washington Post, the military's Joint Personnel Recovery Agency warned that the Bush administration’s interrogation program was “torture” and that it would produce “unreliable information.” JPRA is the military agency that ran the program known as Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE), “which trains pilots and others to [...]

Sad Sign of the Times

Was just reading a story on the local newspaper website and noticed the box showcasing the "top stories" of the day. It's pretty sad when this is number 1:

Olbermann vs Hannity

Quick Friday Followup to my Twitter post last night, taking not of Keith Olbermann's promise to contribute $1,000 to charity for every second that Sean Hannity is waterboarded.  Olbermann went off on Hannity last night, after Hannity argued that waterboarding is not torture and, in fact, really isn't all that horrible.

The Torture Memos

Every once in a while, a little item comes across my desk that makes me chuckle. Tonight’s is political in nature and comes in the form of what was probably a slip of the tongue, but that just makes it all the better, consider who’s tongue slipped.

Boehner accidentally tells the truth

Once in a great while, the House Minority Leader strays from the script. It's safe to assume he'd like to take this one back. While cable news outlets and major newspapers continue to use euphemisms [...]

Oh, My!

This could be a REALLY big boost for AT&T and the iPhone!. Look at these speeds!

AT&T is testing bumped-up 3G speeds

AT&T says it is going to increase the downlink capacity on its high speed packet access (HSPA) from 3.6 megabits per second to 7.2 megabits per second by upgrading the software at the base stations. Currently, AT&T has the enhanced network running in two test markets, but […]

Clinton vs. Cheney

Still playing with Windows Live Writer, experimenting with some suggestions to fix some of the concerns I expressed yesterday. Again, kudos to the Live Writer staff for stumbling on my complaints and contacting me. So, let’s get on with the show and try another post.

Clinton on Cheney: ‘It won’t surprise you that I don’t consider him a particularly reliable source.’

In testimony today before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) that she did not view former Vice President Cheney as a "particularly reliable source" on matters related to detainee torture and mistreatment. Rohrabacher had asked Clinton whether she supported the release of documents that Cheney recently [...]

Live Writer Update

Okay, one quick update on MY thoughts about the latest Windows Live Writer program.  First of all, after my earlier post (right down below), which I also posted to Twitter  (via the new Live Writer plugin), I got a Tweet from somebody at Microsoft, wanting to know of my concerns! Consider me mightily impressed at that level of customer service!

Overall, the program loads faster than before and runs faster and more smoothly on my old laptop. There still seem to be some quirks (again, maybe because of my machine) but carriage returns at the end of a line sometimes take you back to the beginning of that line, rather than to a new line. And there are still some formatting issues when copying and pasting from bloglines.

But, I’m getting more and more impressed, especially with a wide array of new touches like picture editing, video uploads, etc. I’ll keep playing with it for a while. It appears to be worth it.

Don’t You Love Being a Test Reader?

So, for the third (fourth, fifth) time, I’m giving  Windows Live Writer a test drive. All of the write-ups say it’s a pretty impressive blogging tool. I’ve not been impressed in the past, sluggish (at least on my old laptop!) and it hasn’t liked to format material I copy from bloglines correctly.  Let’s do a little experiment together, shall we?  How does this look?

Scientists 'disappointed, upset,' and 'consternated' that Bush officials misused their work to justify torture.

In the past week, at least three scientists have come out and objected to their work on sleep deprivation being used by the CIA and Justice Department to justify torture. In one of his 2005 memos, the OLC's Steven Bradbury said that sleep deprivation causes "at most only relatively moderate decreases in pain tolerance." But [...]

I’m still not sure. Took a LOT of mouseclicks so far.

Catching Up

Just a quick update to let you know that I haven't fallen off the face of the earth.  The new project is moving ahead quickly and I'm thrilled about that. I might mean slower posts around here, until I get back into the swing of things.  In the meantime, keep check back and enjoy a moment of zen from this morning's Morning Joe!

Talking Education

I know. I know. It's been too long between posts. I've actually been busy, and that's a GOOD thing! I'll tell you all about the latest project - it's an exciting one! In the meantime, allow me to distract you for a few minutes with something I accidentally caught last night on the old TV machine. Ed Schultz has added an MSNBC program to on top of his radio show and his opening segment last night had some incredible information in it. Stick with the video until he gets into the high school dropout rate information. It will blow you away. He's right - we have a problem.  A BIG problem.

The Job Cuts Continue

And they're still hitting close to home. TV reports tonight talked of tears all around in Memphis. Long-time employees blind-sided and led from the building.

FedEx Lays Off 1,000 Employees Amid Cost-Cutting Effort

FedEx Corp. (FDX) said Friday that it has laid off 1,000 salaried employees as part of a $1 billion cost-reduction plan that it announced last month. "These decisions were incredibly hard for the company but unavoidable given the global economic reality," Fed [...]
